Highlights of the Trek |
|
This is trek offers the opportunity to
escape Nepal's tourist trails, to
venture into the deep forests and roam
the high alpine pastures that flank the
Annapurna range. The emphasis of this
trek is on the forest and wilderness
zones of these mountains. Some villages
are visited on the last days of the
trek, and these receive few visitors and
ratain much of their traditional charm.
There is an essence of exploration on
this trek. The trails we follow are not
well used and sometimes hard to
identify, sometimes shepherds and
pilgrims pass by Our Annapurna
Machapuchare trek is designed to provide
outstanding mountain views, and to get
way from the tea-hose trails and into
the forests and villages that have not
felt the impact of tourism.
Type : moderate
trek

Program Itinerary |
Days 01 :
Arrive in Kathmandu (1330m). You will be met by your
group leader and transferred to the hotel where the
pre-trek briefing will be given. Arrangements are
made today for the distribution of your kit bag.
Remainder of the afternoon at leisure. |
Days 02 :
Day at leisure in Kathmandu. You have time to
explore Kathmandu, Patan, Bhaktapur and the
lesser-known towns that dot the valley, on foot, or
by bicycle or trishaw. The area has an amazing range
of fascinating highlights, whatever your interest.
Excellent book shops, extensive markets, novelty
shops and handicraft shops contrasts with fantastic
centers of cultural and spiritual significance.
Kathamdndu has more World Heritage sites than any
other city in the world. Sightseeing with a guide
can be arranged by our staff in Kathmandu. |
Days 03 :
Drive Kathmandu to Pokhara (980m). Approximately 8
hour drive. An early start by road westward towards
Pokhara. Nepal's second largest town. Leaving the
capital of Kathmandu, our bus follows the winding
road over the valley rim and descends into the
valley where the Trisuli River flows. The Journey is
slow and steady as the road winds through villages
and past fields and we soon catch glimpses of the
high mountain ranges of Ganesh, Manaslu and
Annapurna. Our first night's camp is near the shores
of the Phewa Tal (Lake). |
Days 04 :
To Dhampus 1900m walk Approximately 5 hours. We
drive a short distance to visit the Tibetan Refuge
Camp and commence our trek. We immediately leave the
main trail and walk up the broad Mardi Khola (River)
walley that extends out of Pokhara, passing
fishermen's fish traps at the river side, and make
our qy up into the foothills. Following a ridge
through fields and clumps of bamboo we soon arrive
at a pleasant location for our picnic lunch.
Villagers greet us with "Namaste", the traditional
Nepalese greeting as we pass through Chetri and
Brahman settlements and onto the ridge top. The
scale of the imposing mountains astounds us as we
reach the ridge top and gaze at the adjacent peaks
of Machapuchare (1993m), Hiunchuli (6441m) and
Annapurna South (7219m). We trek along the ridge
until we reach the Gurung village of Dhampus and our
nearby camp, which offers us opportunities for
sunset photographs. |
Days 05 :
To Forest Camp 2480m Walk approx 6 hours. The views
from our campsite are excellent, and morning
generally offers the best opportunity to view the
huge peaks. As we walk, the peaks of the Annapurnas
will be visible through the scattered rhododendron
forest, offering a sample of the trek to come. Much
of the trek route will be visible from the vantage
points this morning, adding to our sense of
expectation; we take lunch at Deorali, the last
outpost of tourist lodges, and ascend into the
rhododendron forest. The trail climbs, quite steeply
at times, towards our camp on top of the ridge
dividing the deep valleys of the Mardi Khola (rever)
to the East, and the Modi Khola to the West. |
Days 06 :
To Humaal 2950m. Walk approx 5 hours. We start the
day with a gradual descent, enjoying the impressive
views of the distant steep terraced paddy fields and
villages that cling to the hillsides. This is
followed by a climb through forest to our dramatic
campsite, high on a grassy knoll, providing
spectacular views of Annapurna and Machapuchare. |
Days 07 :
To Guhe 3680m. Walk approx 5 hours. The mountain
views this morning are among the best on earth. We
have time to appreciate the enormity of these
mountains, with their jagged profiles and huge
tumbling glaciers. The views of Annapurna South,
Hiunchuli and Annapurna 1 and 2 get better with each
step we take upwards through the lush forest of
rhododendron and birch. We enter a zone of dwarf
rhododendron before breaking into the grass hills
above the tree line to our ridge-top campsite. |
Days 08 :
Day hike to Machapuchare Base Cammp. Walk approx 6
hours. We wake this morning to even more spectacular
mountain views. As we are not moving today your have
a choice to relax at camp and savour the views in
the vicinity, or join a day hike to Machapuchare
Base Camp. The options are of course weather
dependent, but which ever you choose you will be
well rewarded with an exceptional day in the
mountains. As you climb you get chose to the
gigantic face of Machapuchare. If time allows, you
may be able to traverse close to the glaciers, or
view the giant sanctuary of Annapurna 1 Annapurna 4.
Climbers are not permitted to climb Machhapuchare,
so to call our destination Base Camp is perhaps a
misnomer, but that is the name the site is given.
Perhaps it reflects a climbers' which list. This
base camp is not the tourist site often referred to
as Machapuchare Base Camp at the Annapurna
Sanctuary. |
Days 09 :
To Humaal 2950m. Walk approx 3 hours. After a
relaxed breakfast we descend reluctantly, stopping
often to soak in the mountain views. This will be
leisurely day as we return through the forest.
We will choose between a high trail and low trail
for our return, the weather conditions will
sometimes determine which path we take, but other
factors can impact on this decision. |
Days 10 :
To Sedding 1500m Walk approx 5 hours. We descend
towards the Mardi Khola today, trekking through
dense forest of rhododendron, oak and birch until we
reach the terraced fields of Sedding, a traditional
village for form the tea-house trails. We have time
to explore the village and visit the nearby
waterfall before we set camp by the river. |
Days 11 :
To Thulo Choor 1250m Walk approx 5 hours. We follow
the river today passing through villages and rice
fields. Today walk is easy and fairly flat for most
of the way. |
Days 12 :
To Pokhara Walk 6 hours. Our walk today is initially
uphill to a high point that provides excellent views
of the mountains, and of the Seti valley far below
us. We walk a short distance to Kamchoor to board
our bus to Pokhara by mid afternoon. Overnight
Pokhara. |
Days 13 :
To Pokhara and Kathmandu. After breakfast we
